“Of all horrible religions the most horrible is the worship of the god within. …That Jones shall worship the god within turns out ultimately to mean that Jones shall worship Jones. Let Jones worship the sun or moon, anything rather than the Inner Light; let Jones worship cats or crocodiles, if he can find any in his street, but not the god within. Christianity came into the world firstly in order to assert with violence that a man had not only to look inwards, but to look outwards, to be hold with astonishment and enthusiasm a divine company and a divine captain. The only fun of being a Christian was that a man was not left alone with the Inner Light, but definitely recognized an outer light, fair as the sun, clear as the moon, terrible as an army with banners.” GK Chesterton

THE PRAYER OF ST. PATRICK
I arise today
Through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,
Through the belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of Creation.
I arise today
Through the strength of Christ’s birth with his baptism,
Through the strength of his crucifixion with his burial,
Through the strength of his resurrection with his ascension,
Through the strength of his descent for the judgment of Doom. Read the rest of this entry »

“Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, ‘Do it again’; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, ‘do it again’ to the sun; and every evening, ‘Do it again’ to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.” GK Chesterton

“Faith, if it is to be sure and steadfast, must lay hold upon nothing else but Christ alone, and in the conflict and terrors of conscience it has nothing else to lean on but this precious pearl Christ Jesus. So, he who apprehends Christ by faith, although he be terrified with the law and oppressed with the weight of his sins, yet he may be bold to glory that he is righteous. How? Even by that precious jewel Christ Jesus, whom he possesses by faith.”

Here it is. Someone has said that most Christians today are simply moral therapeutic deists. In other words, the God in whom they believe is simply a God who exists who tells us to be good and comforts us when we are in need. The God of the Bible overflows these low walls of definition with the superabundance of the trinitarian life of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Coastal in its worship honors this three-personed God – the Father who plans redemption, the Son who accomplishes redemption and the Holy Spirit who applies redemption. God is always more than our theology, and words cannot contain Him. But He is not less.

Go to Christian Audio for a free download of John Piper’s most popular, and most worthy, work, Desiring God. A free audio book is made available each month. You can listen at your computer, on your iPod or MPs player or in your car. It’s rare to be in a book discussion with other Christians when this book does not come up in the conversation.
