The Scripture readings will be 2 Samuel 11:1-15; Psalm 145; John 6:1-21; Ephesians 3:14-21 . In 2 Samuel is recorded the defining story of David’s sin of adultery and murder. In this we find the truth that all fall short of the glory of God. We also find the truth that all disobedience works destruction and pain, both of which characterize David’s future from here on out. With a repentant and humble heart David endured, but the storm was fierce. Ephesians 3 is one of the most beautiful and grand of the prayers in Holy Scripture. In Paul’s prayer we find one of the most lavish of descriptions of the Christian life, a model for our aspirations and longings. John 6 tells the story of the feeding of the five thousand. This is the only miracle recorded in all of the Gospels, as if to call the Christian to give to it special attention. The lesson for us is plain: little becomes much when it is first given to God. God is not bound in His work by human resources. His will is only that He have our all. This is in the power of any Christian to do, to surrender to God everything. The “all” God desires is not a certain amount but merely all. This is His grace to us. The refrain of Psalm 145 is “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.” May your meditation on these Scriptures work in you a deeper experience of God’s Spirit.
