Six on Six

Six on Six – please bring a sentence of six words with you on Sunday, Sept 6, that expresses your experience of and desire for your walk with Christ. Take some time to distill your life with Him and ask yourself questions like:

What have I found out about Christ?
What have I found out about how He works?
In what ways am I learning to trust in Him, hope from Him, rely upon Him?
What mistakes do I want to avoid in the future?
What offering do I want to make to Him in the future?
What experience of Him do I most treasure?
What experience of Him should I most seek?
How has He been faithful to me?
In what particular way do I need to respond to Him?

And the questions go on and on. Our repsonses will be put up on a bulletin board (without author names) to remind others of what Christ means to us.

Lectionary readings for Sunday, August 23

On Sunday, August 23 the Scripture readings will be 1 Kings 8:22-30,41-43; Ephesians 6:10-20; John 6:56-69 ; and Psalm 34.

1 Kings records a model prayer for us in Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the Temple. His large views of God’ faithfulness and promise keeping as well as his surprise at God’s grace to His chosen people depict a posture of humility and surrender. Note especially Solomon’s request that God also hear the prayer of the foreigner and stranger. Here we have an Old Testament awareness that God’s plan extends to all peoples. In John 6 tells the story of those who withdrew from Jesus, offended at his “hard” words. Jesus spoke many things that don’t go along with the current of popular thinking and don’t get us ahead as the world counts ahead. Sheer brilliance on our part and moral muscle can’t sustain us in the life of Christ-following. Jesus’ “Spirit words” can only be received as a gift from the Father. The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6 reminds us that we are in a spiritual warfare and that this is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. We must be prepared. The refrain of Psalm 34 is “Taste and see, taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” Truth is not only brain food but nourishment that comes to us only when tasted.

Compline Service – Sept 27, 8 PM

Coastal will be offering a Compline service the last Sunday of each month, 8 PM. In fixed hour prayer the compline is the prayer that completes the Christian day, gathering up our labors, our believing, our doubting, our sins and our obediences and offering them to God for His purifying and use. In Him we seek our rest and request that He watch over us while we sleep and raise us up in the morning to do His will. The Compline service will be a service that focuses on meaningful silences, quiet meditation, Scripture reading, the use of the Psalms, and the contemplative music of the Taize community. The only sermon will be the one Christ himself preaches to your heart as you sit before Him to receive. The service will be about 30 minutes in length.

The Fighter Verse Bible Memorization Program

Order Your “Fighter Verses” – This is a Bible memory program developed by Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis that Coasters are encouraged to adopt. The Bible versions available are in the English Standard Version or the New International Version. Please sign up on the sheet on the Info Table to select your version. The cost for the packet is $12. Not everyone will feel led of the Lord to adopt the memory program, but all can benefit through the Coastal “Verse of the Week.” Each Monday Coasters will receive a devotional based on the memory verse for that week and by meditation and prayer apply that truth to life. What wonderful gifts God has for us as He opens the spiritual treasure chest of His Word and displays for us His amazing provisions.
